The Hospitality Industry

    Hotels are the oldest commercial Endeavour known to man. The beginning of hotels or Inns have been traced to the sixth century B.C;
   The urge to travel has been the greatest impetus to the hotel industry. When people travelled, they needed a place to rest and eat.
   The invention of the wheel gave a big push to the hotel industry, as people could travel faster and more comfortably.
   Today a hotel caters to every need of a guest. Hence a hotel needs the services of trained staff to provide professional services for international clientele.
   The hotel industry, which is an integral part of the tourism sector, provides a large percentage of the total employment in the tourism industry.
   There is a need for trained manpower in hotels which need to cope with the arrival of 2.5 million tourists per year.
   Tourism has been the fastest growing industry in the world for the past 50 years, and today it is the world's largest industry. Domestic tourism is as old as Indian society.
   It increased to167 million in 1998 from just 64 million in 1990, thus registering a compound annual growth of 12.28%. It is India's third largest export industry after readymade            garments and gems & jewellery. Tourism is a global phenomenon, an expression of man's natural instincts to move from one place to another.
   Our tourist attractions warrant more tourists than we are getting now. No other country can match India as a tourist draw.
   The potential is so high that foreigners visiting India are convinced that so much more can be done to promote Indian tourism in foreign destinations.
   The Tourism industry earns about 14,000 crore per annum in foreign exchange. 50 percent of it is accounted for by hotels and restaurants.
   The foreign exchange earned by the Tourism sector is of high quality for many reasons.
   Our Import content is less than 10 percent of the earnings.
   Most of the payments to hotels and restaurant are mad by cash or credit card and overseas receipts are realized quickly.
   There are no 'tainted exports' of any kind. Tourism has emerged as an investment in employment generation, poverty, alleviation and sustainable human development. The fastest growing industry in India and abroad presently employs over three million people in India and is growing at an average of over ten percent.
   Impetus to the hotel and related hospitality industry has been provided by the arrival of international majors, this has become a favored profession because of a high salary and emoluments, exceptional growth opportunities, excellent working environment, opportunity to work abroad, etc.
   A recent survey of ATEC included hospitality as one of the best possible careers for Indians.
   Presently Hospitality personnel are in demand not only in the traditional hotel and restaurant business but also in other industries including resorts, airlines, restaurants, contract and transport catering, tourism, fast food operations, school meals, hospitals, halls of residence, shipping and the armed forces.
